I’ve been collecting up various MSM and blog links for Rita coverage…

As of 4 pm, Rita is a category 5 storm with 165-mph winds, located 300 miles west of Key West, Florida. Rita is moving west at 12 mph, and will move out into the central Gulf over the next 24-48 hours. Yet another one for the record books. This is the first time in recorded history that two Cat 5 Hurricanes have developed in the Gulf of Mexico in the same year.

I’m in Jersey Village, nestled right in there at Beltway 8 and 290. Just about two blocks from the JV High School. I *plan* on blogging through this, as long as I have both an Internet connection and power.
Wish me luck!

FYI
The guys who had set up the SEA-EAT Tsunami blog have set up a similar Rita Help blog. I am also one of the contributors on that blog right now.

My regular blog wouldn’t let me setup email blogging without setting up a cron, which I can’t do at my server, and I didn’t want to diddle around asking the server owner (he probably would have, but I was busy).
So I set up email blogging at Blogger (see linked) to blog my teensy neck of the woods near Almeda Mall and north of Ellington AFB.
Mostly it’s lists of what I’ve done, and ToDo stuff, along with other stuff going on (like checking in with the neighbors). Might be something useful there for someone that’s never gone through a hurricane before, but darn I’ve never been through such a strong one myself, eeek stop with the friggin millibar drops already!
I’ll try to report on my evacuated neighbor houses if I can find someone with an internet phone — I gave the blog address to three of them, so not that many. If I can’t find an internet phone, it will be all after-the-fact blogging, yawn!
Stay dry everyone!
PS: Laurence! Here’s a -dont’ be dumb like I was’ hint about cats:
Watch your cats when you light candles! I chose my candle locations based on them not being under something that could catch fire, but as soon as I fed my cat on the kitchen counter, he flicked his tail over a candle and it caught fire! I snatched him fast, and drug his tail through the flood water in the kitchen so fast he didn’t even realize he was on fire. I moved the candles FAR away from his favorite spots.

Blogging at The Fyre Place, through the storm. Don’t forget about the Houston Metro Blog, either; a lot of us over there are staying through.

Dear Houston Friends,
I am wondering if you could help me. We started a very effective and successful blog for Hurricane Katrina relief, The Hurricane Katrina Direct Relief! blog http://gracedavis.typepad.com/katrinablog
The blog provides information for donors who wish to help victims with supply shipments sent directly to the shelters. We also posted volunteer opportunities for those who wanted to help in the disaster zone.
We’re going to do the same for Hurricane Rita and what we need are ‘boots-on-the- ground’ volunteers to email the blog keepers information on:
**What exactly the shelters need. Our boots-on-the-ground volunteers contacted the shelters and identified urgent needs for the evacuees:
Example- http://gracedavis.typepad.com/katrinablog/2005/09/bath_supplies_m.html
**Where the volunteers are needed and contact information of the volunteer coordinator:
Example - http://gracedavis.typepad.com/katrinablog/2005/09/volunteer_kathy.html
Boots-on-the-ground volunteers should be locals close in proximity to the affected area and be willing to visit and call the shelters and fire departments, etc. on a regular basis. We currently work with three moms in Mississippi who make the rounds and email us with their reports, which are then posted to the Katrina relief blog.
Can anyone help us with this? Would you know of anyone who could? If you do, please contact me at the email address for this comment.
Good luck everyone. Please, take care of yourselves.

I just blogged the appeal for aid to create a Hurricane Rita Direct Relief blog as part of my ongoing blogging on how creative use of technology — especially the location-based, real-time personal communications technologies that we increasingly use on a daily basis — can help deal with these disasters and homeland security:

It’s a bit after the fact now, but my “Escape From Houston” is posted over at http://www.houblog.com
We were in a zone C evac area, and now are sitting 400 miles away in NE La. wondering how (and when) we’re going to get back with no gas in the Houston region (and shortages here) plus 15+ inches of rain expected to fall between here and there.
